Harper’s week passed in a haze of giddiness and confusion. The three of them functioned like a family unit most of the time anyway, since they spent so much time caring for Quinn, but over the next week it felt comfortable, normal even. After Quinn went to bed, the two of them went to Harper’s room. To sleep.

Devlin kissed her good night and held her close while they slept. She woke up every morning wrapped in his arms, but nothing else. Which made no sense. They’d already had sex. What was he waiting for?

At the end of the week, she found out.

He grabbed her hand on the way out the door in the morning and kissed her. “Can I take you to dinner tonight?”

“What about Quinn?”

“Sadie and Eagle are keeping her overnight,” he said with a wink.

Heat rushed into her cheeks, but she smiled. Oh. “Alright. Where are we going?”

“Steakhouse in town, ok? I didn’t want to go too far…” He trailed off and this time she kissed him.

“That sounds perfect.”

He huffed out a relieved laugh. “Ok, be ready at six.”

“You got it.”

Harper watched him head out the door. It amazed her how disciplined he was about getting up and going to work for what would be considered normal business hours. He could do his job pretty much from anywhere, anytime. Hm, maybe something to ask him about tonight. After all, she’d never been on a date. She wasn’t sure how to make conversation for something like this.

She made her way over to the main cabin. She should have been ready for the ambush of questions, but Harper was so lost in her own thoughts it didn’t occur to her that the others would have questions.

Sadie was the first person she saw. The other woman was growing rounder each day, but she glowed with the health of pregnancy. Her squeal when Harper entered the cabin with Quinn made Harper freeze in place.

“Tell me, everything!” Sadie demanded.

Harper’s forehead scrunched in confusion. “About what?”

“Your date!”

“Yeah, spill! Why didn’t you tell me?” Laura asked, hurt clear in her voice from behind Harper. She jumped. She hadn’t even heard Laura behind her.

Harper set Quinn on the floor and the little girl toddled off for the box of toys Sadie kept for her. She turned back to face the other two, who were looking at her expectantly.

“We’re going to dinner, and I didn’t tell you because he just asked me out this morning,” Harper said, lifting her chin.

“And?” Laura prompted.

“And what?”

“What else has happened?”

“What do you mean?” Harper hedged.

Laura scowled. “Don’t bullshit me Harper. Just because things are different now doesn’t mean I don’t know you.”

Harper flushed. “Laura, I—”

“Laura, hush. She doesn’t owe you, me, or anyone else an explanation,” Sadie said, her voice quiet. “Sorry I jumped on you.”

Laura glared at Sadie. “I want to know—”

“Exactly, you want to know. What does Harper want?”

Laura froze, then her face went blank. “You don’t want to tell me?” she whispered.

Harper’s heart squeezed. “There’s not much to tell.
